Hands-Only CPR for an adult

  1. Check and call. Tap and shout. If there is no response and no normal breathing, call 911 and send someone for an AED.
  2. Hands in place. Heel of one hand on the center of the chest, other hand on top.
  3. Push hard and fast. At least 2 inches deep, 100 to 120 times a minute. Follow the beat above.
  4. Let the chest come all the way back up between pushes.
  5. Don't stop until help or an AED arrives. Use the AED as soon as it gets there.

Why songs help

Every song here runs between 100 and 120 beats a minute, the same speed as good chest compressions. If you can hum one of them in your head, you'll push at the right pace without counting. Pick the one you'll remember under stress.

For adults

Stayin' Alive is the classic. Dancing Queen and Eye of the Tiger are easy for most crowds to remember.

For kids

Baby Shark is a great way to teach young learners. Uptown Funk works well for teens.

The START button plays an original beat at each song's tempo. "Play the real song" plays the official video, streamed from YouTube.
